Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is philanthropy?

In its simplest form, philanthropy can be described as “the act of giving back”. In the dictionary, it is explained as “the desire to promote the welfare of others, expressed especially by the generous donation of money to good causes”. Although the term is often directly related to monetary giving, I believe there is a big misconception that you have to be a millionaire to be a philanthropist. Breaking news – you don’t! That’s why Journey to PhilanTHIRTY was created – to show you how you can be or may already be a philanthropist, too.

2. Will you host an actual event or celebration for your birthday?

As much as I would love to throw a party, I've decided not to in order to focus solely on planning and executing a successful fundraiser. Maybe I'll later change my mind and of course you'd be invited. ;)

3. Do I have to donate $30? Can I give more or less?

In charity, any amount is an appreciated amount. Although $30 is the suggested donation, you can certainly give less (or more!) than that. It doesn’t matter the amount. If you truly give from your heart, that is what counts!

4. How did you think of this?

I answer this question on the About page. See here

5. How much money has been donated so far?

The donations page provides real-time tracking of gifts received so far.

6. Why didn’t you pick a charity for cancer research, veterans, or the arts?

Video blog about this coming soon. Again, stay tuned!

7. Is my donation tax-deductible?

Charitable contributions are only tax-deductible if they are made to organizations with 501c3 tax-exempt status. Because Journey to PhilanTHIRTY is a personal fundraising campaign, unfortunately it does not qualify for 501c3 status.

8. How do we know you’ll actually donate the money to charity?

If you are on this website, there’s a big chance that you know me well or you know someone who knows me well so you trust I’m not a scandalous person. BUT, should this campaign go viral (hopefully) and there are strangers that would like to donate but are skeptical of my true intentions, I plan to be 100% transparent and share on this website a screenshot of donation receipts once the contributions are made.

9. Will you donate any of your own money to the campaign?

Great question! To get this journey on the road, I’ve given us a jumpstart and made the very first donation of $30. Will you help me raise the rest?! We're going #30to3000! :)
